Sinusitis & Bronchitis Treatment in New Jersey
At Northern Valley Allergy Asthma and Sinus, in addition to allergy treatments, we can provide diagnosis and treatment for both sinusitis and bronchitis, two conditions that interfere with your breathing.
What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis, otherwise known as a “sinus infection,” is the inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Under normal circumstances, sinuses are filled with air, but when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) can grow and cause an infection.
What are Sinusitis Symptoms?
Symptoms of sinusitis can include nasal congestion, a thick, yellow, or greenish discharge from the nose or down the back of the throat, pain, tenderness, swelling, and pressure around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead, reduced sense of smell and taste, cough, and fever.
What Causes Sinusitis?
A viral infection is the most common cause of sinusitis, but other allergens can also trigger sinus inflammation. Chronic or recurrent sinusitis might develop from prolonged inflammation rather than infection. Other contributing factors include nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, or medical conditions that compromise the immune system.
What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which are the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. This inflammation results in coughing and the production of mucus, often leading to difficulty in breathing. Various factors, including infections, irritants, and underlying respiratory diseases, can cause it. There are two primary forms of bronchitis: acute and chronic.
What are Symptoms of Bronchitis?
Some of the most common bronchitis symptoms include the following:
- A persistent cough that may produce clear, white, yellow, or green mucus.
- Shortness of breath, especially with physical activity.
- Wheezing, whistling, or squeaky sound while breathing.
- Chest tightness or discomfort.
- Low fever and chills.
- A feeling of tiredness or fatigue.
- Blocked or runny nose.
What Causes Bronchitis?
Bronchitis can be caused by both viral and bacterial infections. The most common cause of acute bronchitis is viruses, which are the same ones that cause colds and the flu. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is often caused by long-term exposure to irritants that damage the lungs and airways. This includes cigarette smoke, air pollution, dust, and chemical fumes. It’s more common in smokers and in people who live or work in areas with high levels of pollutants or dust.
